A Guided Reading Course For Young Scholars

Being well-read is a quality that is highly valued in our fast-paced, ever-changing world. Only by looking back can we move forward with confidence. Reading the classics gives us the tools we need to understand both ourselves and those around us. In this six-week online course you will explore a range of classic texts, both Western and non-Western, that are suitable for young scholars, providing you a window into the joys of reading for love and learning.

Each week you will be set homework in the form of reading passages, poems or stories, and completing writing tasks to guide your understanding and appreciation. By the end of the six weeks you will have given thought to your own list of great books.

During the six weeks you will learn the following:

  1. What is good literature
  2. What is a literary cannon
  3. How to choose your own canon
  4. Can a story be universal?
  5. A literary timeline: from Romanticism to Postmodernism and beyond
  6. Different ways of reading a text
  7. Marginalised voices
  8. The best books of all time: choose your own
  9. The development of writing systems and story-telling
  10. The death of the author and other literary theories
  11. Modern uses of the canon
  12. The importance of being earnest in your reading

Online workshops will be held weekly on Thursdays at 5.00pm and repeated on Saturday morning at 9.00am. The workshops will also be recorded and uploaded to our course, along with support materials so that you can watch or rewatch and study at your leisure.

There will also be a lively Facebook community where everyone can share their ideas. I will be available mot days in the group, sharing quotes, tips and tidbits.

Mel and Sam are a dynamic mother-daughter duo, with experience in writing and theatre. In another life, Mel is a Senior English teacher and author of adult and childrens' novels. Sam studied Theatre at the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries and has won Queensland Theatre's Young Playwrights Award, along with DUX, CIVA and Pathmaker Awards at her school. Together, they run Writing Excellence Programs for Young Scholars at Writer on the Road.
